Botanical elements
The sage belongs to the Heilanthi family and is a knee-high shrub with many branches and grey-green, velvety leaves. The sage blooms early in the summer with light blue, blue-violet, red or white flowers.
Parts and ingredients used
The fresh or dried leaves and their preparations are used medicinally. The most important pharmacologically active ingredients are tannins and triterpenes as well as the essential oil, with thujon, cineol and camphor as the main ingredients.
Scientifically proven applications
The use of sage consists in disorders of the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, in intense sweating (internal use) as well as in inflammations of the mucous membrane of the mouth and pharynx (external use). To combat inflammations of the oral and pharyngeal cavity, the components of sage leaves that have different properties complement each other.
The essential oil has an antimicrobial effect, the triterpene ursolic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect and the tannins rebuild the wounded skin.
In limited quantities, sage leaves also contain bitter ingredients that stimulate the appetite and the action of the gastrointestinal tract. The inhibition of sweat production is attributed to tannins.
